Research and Activities

In this section, you can find information and background on the various research activities of the RNID New Technologies team, and more details about the services and products we have developed. While some of these documents are written for mainstream audiences, a lot of the information here is specifically written for technical audiences or for manufacturers or service providers seeking detailed guidance.

TalkByText Overview

TalkByText is the name of RNID's family of award winning, state of the art solutions for real-time text communication. There are business edition and home edition version for Windows, as well as a version for mobile phones and a web edition.

Turning English material into BSL

There are over 50,000 users of British Sign Language (BSL) in the UK. BSL is very different to English. Making key information on your website available in BSL, or sending out important letters and other information to BSL users in signed form makes it properly accessible to this user group. RNID now offers an English-to-BSL service for this purpose.

Mobile Textphones

Being able to communicate effectively while on the move is no longer a luxury, rather has become an important part of daily live in the modern world. We have developed several solutions for mobile text telephony.

Virtual Signing

Being able to access information in British Sign Language (BSL) is often of great benefit to BSL users. However, it is not always possible to use video streaming or video clips. In order to make BSL content available in those circumstances, RNID has for many years been developing virtual signing technologies.

SpeedText 3 Electronic Notetaking software

Many deaf and hard of hearing people struggle to follow meetings, lectures and other events. Electronic notetaking is one possible solution. SpeedText 3 is a Windows application for electronic notetaking.

Work in IETF standardisation

Open standards define how products and services are designed. For many years, we have been participating in the SIP and SIPPING working groups of the Internet Engineering Task Force to create more accessible Internet telephony and multimedia services.

Disabled People and ICT

The Alliance for Digital Inclusion (ADI) appointed a consortium led by RNID and supported by the Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) and leading technology development consultancy Scientific Generics to research the use of information and communication technology (ICT) by disabled people.
