Many deaf and hard of hearing people struggle to follow meetings, lectures and other events. Electronic notetaking is one possible solution. SpeedText 3 is a Windows application for electronic notetaking.
The SpeedText system consists of two software programs for the Microsoft Windows environment, called SpeedText Operator and SpeedText Client. SpeedText Operator is used by the notetaker, while SpeedText Client is the used by the person reading the notes on screen.
With the SpeedText application suite, a notetaker can produce notes during a presentation, a lecture, a meeting or any other type of event. These notes can be displayed on a screen or on another computer or even projected on a large screen for public viewing. The notes can be written to a transcription file for later viewing, editing and distribution.
SpeedText uses IP networking to connect the Operator and Client modules. However, it is possible to use SpeedText Operator as a standalone application. Access to the full features set of SpeedText suite however requires running both SpeedText Operator and SpeedText Client.
The Operator and Client modules can be running on the same machine, or on different computers. When using two computers for respectively the Operator and the Client, the network connection between the machines can be made using a direct cable connection, over a wired network or via a wireless link. There can be any number of operators and clients in a given session
Transcripts can be viewed, amended and saved as a personalised copy for further work or dissemination. SpeedText 3 allows the Operator to use abbreviation lists and to use prepared text. SpeedText Client allows in-session annotations and additional notes to be made. Operator and Client users can communicate with one another via a built-in chat function.
Screen layout, display font and style are all customisable.
SpeedText 3 also fully supports multiple display configuration and comes with additional utilities, including a log viewer and a display checker.
