All of the rates are available online at www.ictrnid.org.uk/tbtrates.html
Calls to other TalkByText users don't cost us anything so we don't charge for those.
You can pay for calls using a credit or debit card. Unfortunately these are currently the only options we have.
The call goes to our server via your internet connection. The textcall is then made from our server. Because it is our server that makes the call and not your phone we still get charged so we have to pass that charge on to you.
Although many home phone packages get reduced rates on their calls we are not eligible for those discounts.
We pass on the call costs that we incur and unfortunately we do not get a rebate on Text Relay calls. Unfortunately, since we don't get a rebate ourselves we cannot pass one on to you.
Back to top of pageTalkByText Home Edition and Business Edition will only work on Windows computers. Mac users will be able to use the Web Edition though.
As a charity we need to make sure we get the best impact possible for the resources we put in. Apple Mac or Linux computers do not have a large enough market share for this to be worthwhile. They can both, however, use the Web Edition.
As a charity we need to make sure we get the best impact possible for the resources we put in. iPhones and Android phones can both use the Web Edition so do not need separate Apps.
TalkByText Web Edition is a textphone built into a webpage so should work on almost any phone capable of viewing the web.
There is sometimes a problem with Blackberry phones provided by employers because the strict security measures on some corporate servers block TalkByText from accessing our servers. If this might be the case then contact your IT team and explain the problem.
Back to top of pageThe TalkByText license is a single user license but we recognise that some people have both desktop and laptop computers. Because of this we allow you to install the software twice but if you try to use the same username on both installations then running them both at the same time can cause unpredictable behaviour.
Yes, but you will need to release the license on the old machine before installing TalkByText on the new machine.
To do this:
Open TalkByText,
Open the help menu,
Select License information,
Click Release License,
TalkByText will then close and you will need to reactivate the license before you can use it again.
This should free up one of the installations on your license and allow you to install it again.
Open TalkByText,

Select License information,
Click Release License,
TalkByText will then close and you will need to reactivate the license before you can use it again.
TalkByText will work over almost any internet connection but you will need to be connected to the internet to make or receive a call.
TalkByText Home Edition makes an outbound TCP connection to our server and then uses that for all communications. Since this connection came from your computer it is seen as being unlikely to be a security risk and so is allowed by most firewalls. If you think that your firwall is blocking TalkByText however then you should make sure that it allows iTextClient.exe to access the internet.
TalkByText Web Edition is a website and so should be allowed by most firewalls.

Go to www.ictrnid.org.uk/tbtweb.html for information and to set up an account.
RNID no longer supports Mobile Edition but all phones suitable for viewing the internet should be able to use the Web Edition.
Back to top of pageTalkByText uses a bank of modems to breakout to the phone system. The status message "No available modem" means all of these are currently busy. If you wait a little while then they should become free again.
We do monitor modem usage and if it becomes a problem we can add more modems.
You will need to be logged in as an administrator to release the license.
If the TBT client cannot connect to services.ictrnid.org.uk then that suggests there is a network problem. This is generally caused by security software blocking the connection but can also be due to a poor internet connection.
If your internet connection appears to be fine then check that your firewall is not blocking a program called iTextClient.exe. This is the filename for the TalkByText program and so should be allowed through your firewall.
If you used an email address to set up the account or have attached an email address to the account then you can use the "reset your password here" link on the web edition login page to get a list of usernames and passwords you own.
If you used a mobile phone number to create the account and have not attached an email address to the account then our Technology Development team will be able to resend the text message with your password in.
If you change a password used by Home Edition then you will also need to change the password in the Home Edition client.
To do this:There is a pdf explaining how to do this available at http://www.ictrnid.org.uk/downloads/TBTHE_Changing_password.pdf
This means that the address that you have entered does not match the one in the bank records. Try entering it again and pay special attention to the numbers in your address.
This means either that the address that you have entered does not match the one in the bank records or that the security code on the back of the card is wrong. Try entering it again and pay special attention to the numbers in your address.
TalkByText Web edition works well on any device suited for viewing web pages and this includes Blackberrys.
There is sometimes a problem with Blackberry phones provided by employers because the strict security measures on some corporate servers block TalkByText from accessing our servers. If this might be the case then contact your IT team and explain the problem.
Sometimes the hestack.cfg file can get corrupted. This is unlikely to happen by chance but may be caused be overenthusiastic security software.
1. Do a search on your hard drive for hestack.cfg (this may show up as just hestack and if you have office installed windows will probably think it is an Office application),
2. Check that it is the right file. On Windows 2000 or XP it will show up as being in folder "C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Interactive Text" or similar and on Vista or Windows 7 it should show up as being in "C:\Users\[User name]\Appdata\Roaming\" or similar.
3. Either delete it or rename it. If Home Edition can't find it then it will download a fresh copy from our server. If you are uncomfortable deleting files that look like system files you can just rename it and this will mean you can rename it back again later.
If this keeps happening then it may be worth asking the Technology development team about the feasibility of adding the /ForceConfigUpdate modifier to the registry key at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
This should make TalkByText renew its configuration file every time Windows starts up but it may get overwritten.
The most likely reason for this is that your connection is dropping out partway through a call.
If your internet connection goes down for brief periods then TalkByText will struggle. Try to ensure you have a good internet connection and if you are using mobile broadband then try to ensure you have two or three bars of reception before making a call.
